Why is my dog so lethargic?
Several days ago, my jack russell terrier came into the house with a red nose, swollen face, and bloodshot eyes. My parents rushed him to the vet, who determined he'd been stung by something and gave him a shot of benadryl and steroids. The swelling went down and he was fine, but ever since then he's been lacking in his usual energy. He's never been one to lay around much and now he's doing so nonstop. Is he feeling some after-effects of the shot, or should I be worried?
I should add that he is eating/drinking, he comes to greet us at the door, and will play, but he just seems excessively sleepy. He's much harder to get excited and, as I said, lays around all day if he's able.
How long ago was the steroid administered? The lethargy is a side effect of the Benadryl. He should be back to his old self within 2-3 days of the incident.
If it's been longer, or if he doesn't regain his normal energy, I'd suggest calling the vet.
